Scenes from "After Midnight"

This webpage was done as a one-time-only special treat for those foreign viewers who have never heard Gary, Chuck, and Marissa as they were *meant* to be. Audio versions are in .wav format -- my computer blows a gasket if I try to convert .wav files to a more compact type of file, so you're stuck with these. <g> I'm providing both the entire .wav files (each approximately 1.25 MB), as well as three smaller .wav files for each scene. Choose your poison, cross your fingers, and hope it works!

Gary's apartment at the Blackstone....
Gary has just read an article in the Paper to Marissa...
(Entire .wav file for this scene 1.25MB)

(.wav file for the following section 353 KB)

Marissa:
Well, what are you waiting for?

Gary:
What do you mean?

Marissa:
Somewhere in this city, a mother's about to abandon her child. Go and find her.

Gary:
Sure, maybe I'll find Jimmy Hoffa while I'm at it.

Marissa:
Gary, that's not what I mean.

Gary:
Well, there's not much to go on here, Marissa.

Marissa:
Go with what you have. Start at St. Mary's.

(.wav file for the following section 252 KB)

Gary:
Look, the article doesn't say anything about her being a parishioner at the church.

Marissa:
Is there a picture of the bassinet?

Gary:
No, but all bassinets look alike.

Marissa:
Is there a picture of the baby?

Gary:
Well, at ten weeks, all babies look alike.

{Marissa sighs and gives him "the look."}

{Spike whines and gives him "the look."}

{Exasperated, Gary gets up to get his coat.}

(.wav file for the following section 359 KB)

Marissa:
Going somewhere?

Gary:
Yeah, out in the rain to find an unidentified woman carrying a bassinet with a baby boy in it, to casually inquire whether or not she plans to abandon him tonight.

Marissa:
Uh, Gary? Don't forget your umbrella.

Gary and Chuck at McGinty's...
(Entire .wav file for this scene 1.26MB)

(.wav file for the following section 374 KB)

Chuck:
Marcia -- did you really love her?

Gary:
Yeah {barely audible}

Chuck:
How did you know?

Gary:
I don't know. I guess, uh... she was beautiful. She was smart. She was in love with me.
{pause}

(.wav file for the following section 594 KB)

Gary:
She used to make me blueberry pancakes every sunday morning. With melted butter.

Chuck:
She melted the butter?

Gary:
Mm. Insisted on picking me up at the airport too.

Chuck:
I don't even pick my mother up at the airport when she comes to visit.

Gary:
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Are you telling me you that you think you're in love with a woman who you shared a $5 cab ride with?

Chuck:
No. I just wanted the opportunity, that's all.

(.wav file for the following section 196 KB)

Gary:
You know what I think?

Chuck:
What?

Gary:
Opportunity doesn't knock. It presents itself when you beat down the door.
