Pardon me while I gush... I've actually seen this a few times, but my reaction to it has not diminished. This episode is just so BEAUTIFUL- I MELT into a puddle on the floor every time Gary tells Emma that she's worth the risk. Romance doesn't usually affect me this way, but let me tell you...well, this is one that does- in a BIG way!!

Gush away. I love when we get little glimps of Gary being his relaxed self, like the scene with him and Emma watching a movie and eating popcorn. The only scene I just cringe at is when he keeps leaving her at the Falafels and Waffles place. I feel embarrassed for him because he can't really explain to her why he's doing that.

I LOVE that moment with the two of them on the couch eating popcorn! That's just SO CUTE and so cuddly! And as for Dino's, I think Gary should've ignored Chuck and rescheduled the date. :) Then again, he did manage to salvage it in such a thoughtful way.

Hmm, something just occured to me. You think maybe the paper's obstructions were its subtle way of telling Gary it was not to be? The more I watch, the more I become convinced that, in Crumb's words, "someone or something is looking out for that kid." So far, the paper has told him where to live ("Home"), interfered with his love life on numerous occassions, and explicitly saved his life, once before he was even involved with the paper ("Time"). You know, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we discovered that Cat was hanging around that Camaro!

Phantom is one of my favorites too! :) I just absolutely love Emma's patience with Gary. Even after all she went through, she was there for him, to listen to him and then forgave him. Just goes to show what a little tenderness and understanding, and trust can do to a fellow. I mean the guy was ready to spill the beans to her about the paper! Brigatti could learn a lesson here that maybe sometimes a little tenderness can go a loooonnngg ways. :)

I just loved the scene on the stairs in front of the neighborhood, art project wall when Emma said, "What am I going to do with you Gary
Hobson?" Looking up at her,Gary had this look of a child who knows he has done something wrong, but you can't resist me look on his face...Wow I would have forgiven him too in a heartbeat!

The scene at the end when Emma is going up the staircase, and the Opera song is being song,....does anyone know what the song was saying? I didn't understand it, but I just loved it anyway.

I thought it was interesting what you said about the paper perhaps controlling his life. I had just had a thought the other day that maybe Gary was "supposed" to be a finalist in that essay contest when he was 11 so that he would go to Chicago and meet Lucius Snow.

karens608,
That's an intesting point about Gary being a finalist in the essay contest when he was 11 so that he could come to Chicago & meet Lucius Snow. It makes you wonder that when Lucius Snow saved young Gary's life somehow he knew that this kid would grow up to be a responsible, caring, and sensitive man able to undertake the responsibility imposed by the paper.

I love this ep because Gary seems so light hearted at least up till the end. He seemed more like Jeff Metcalf (homefront) in this ep. It was wonderful to see him smile, be unsure about asking a girl out being nervous around her (he was so adorable when he was apologizing for missing the date) And in the hall way when he wanted to read her note. I also love seeing him really open up and tell Emma how he felt. That she was worth the hurt. I just wonder after it was over if he felt the same. I so wished I could have been standing there behind him on the staircase at the opera and held him as he watched her walk away. And said I am here I won't leave you. All I can say is Marco must have been a heck of a man if she would leave Gary for him.

That popcorn scene! Oh, my God! It is so wonderful. I love that whole episode because you got to see a whole side of Gary you normally don't -- laughing, soft and romantic. As the episodes go on, Gary gets so emotionally guarded from being hurt, but this one, the shell hasn't started to form yet. And I love the scene in the hall where she hugs him and he just laughs. I think Kyle looks good with petite women since he's tall. He just looks so BIG next to them. Then the street painting - oh, to find a guy that is so into a girl he knows her dreams.

The song (which was also being played at the art museum where Emma was working on the painting) is 'Nessun' Dorma' ('None shall sleep') from Puccini's 'Turandot.' I'm not sure what the full translation is either, but it is a great song. :)

I bawl my eyeballs out everytime I hear "Nessun Dorma" and here's why:
(Lyrics)
No one will sleep! No one will sleep!
You,too, oh, Princess,
In your virginal room,
Watch the stars
Trembling with love and hope!

But my secret lies hidden within me,
No one shall discover my name!
Oh no, I will reveal it only on your lips
when dayligh shines forth!
And my kiss shall break
the silence that makes you mine!

Depart, oh night! Set you stars! At dawn I shall win!
I shall win! I shall win!

i dug that episode too!! i loved it when gary hugged emma; his eyes were closed & he looked so sweet and it seem like he was really absording the moment and savoring his love & devotion for her. it was cute when they were eating popcorn, it would of been cuter if gary or emma start having a popcorn fight!! i loved when gary sacrificed his chance of having a relationship with emma so she can be reuntied with her long-lost love. he's such a sweet guy!!

Thanks earlydues and Ren for the information! The words are
absolutely beautiful! I think I'll buy the CD to add to my
EE collection. I can just see all of us EE fans around the world, working around our homes, listening to 'Turandot' at full volume, and our family thinking that we have finally loss it. LoL!! I've always had a weak spot for Opera, just never bought any CDs or tapes. :)

stephaniearwen,
The cat hanging around the Camaro.....LOL :) :) :) So glad that I read this post at home lest people around me would think I'm crazy. Thanks for giving me a great laugh :) I think that Luck of The Irish is a so-so episode, but I do love that scene where Gary discovers that he was conceived in the back of a Camaro.
