Regis: All right, how would you like to know tomorrow's news today? Yeah, that's the dilemma faced by Gary Hobson on the hit series "Early Edition." Gary is played ever so well by actor Kyle Chandler - the women go crazy when they see this guy.

Kathie: Anxious to see him in person.

Regis: So am I. Here he is, from Early Edition, Kyle Chandler!

[Applause! Kyle comes out, dressed in blue jeans and a pullover wind jacket which was over a white shirt. He looks pale and his hair is ruffled.]

Regis: Hey, how ya doin'? Nice to see ya.

Kyle: Fine, thanks. How are you? Very nice to meet you.

Kathie: Thank you, same here.

Regis: Kyle, we've had you on the show before?

Kyle: {hopping onto the chair} No.

Regis: You've never been on before?

Kyle: Nope.

Regis: You've never done this show before?

Kyle: Never.

Regis: Gee, he looks familiar to me.

Kyle: {looking around at the audience} Never.

Regis: We've never had Kyle... {"Whoo!" from the audience} Okay.

Kathie: What would we know you from before this, Kyle?

Kyle: Uh, Homefront probably {scratches neck}, Tour of Duty... {applause}

Regis: Oh, sure!

Kyle: Yeah, a few movies...

Regis: Here's the Homefront gang from 1991-1993 {holds up cast photo} That was alovely cast.

Kyle: Wow.

Regis: You played Jeff Metcalf, huh?

Kyle: Yes.

Regis: 'Bout World War II veterans, it was, uh...

Kyle: It was, ah, well, my brother came back in that one and, ah, I was too young to go so, and I was just, I was just home takin' his girlfriend that he was gonna marry, so I...

Regis: Oh, I see. {laughter}

Kyle: So that was a fun role... {half-smile}

Kathie: Don'tcha hate it when that happens?

Kyle: {smiling}...very difficult.

Regis: You know, I thought about this for a long time. The guy has the ability to see tomorrow morning's papers. You know what I'd do, don'tcha? Look right to the stock page.

Kyle: {laughing} That's what I'd do {scratch) too.

Regis: Absolutely. And the ball games and the horse race results, I mean you got it all there.

Kyle: Yeah.

Kathie: But it presents all kinds of moral questions and dilemmas for your character. I mean, do you use that for good, do you use it for your own personal gain, do you use it to perhaps stop another person's death, but maybe cause another person's, right? Is that the premise?

Kyle

Kyle: That's, that's the opportunity. I, I think we've covered, we've covered most of the, most of those bases throughout the show, the, uh, I think when the show started, uh, a question I asked was if this guy could, uh, cover thearc of being a real dastardly fellow and the paper changing his life into realizing he has to do good. 'Cause, I imagine that if someone had the paper, and they didn't do something with it, they'd hear lots of voices at night of, uh, people who were killed, or what have you, that he didn't help.

Kathie: Haunting him.

Kyle: Yeah, it would haunt him basically, um, leading him to whatever end. But as the show is, uh, the character, I think Gary gets it, because wherever the paper comes from realizes he can handle it and he'll use it for certain purposes, and hence my character does. And you got the role of Fisher Stevens on one side, who wants to do what you and I would probably do with it...

Regis: Right, good ol' Fisher Stevens.

Kyle: ...and then you got Shanesia Davis on the other side who, uh, is not only blind, but has a, has a second sense.

Kathie: An ESP kind of thing.

Kyle: Yeah, kinda has a special quality that takes her into a knowing space. And so, I'm stuck in between.

Kathie: Oh, I have that. {snort laugh}

Kyle: Yes, exactly, so, uh, the good, the bad, the um...

Regis: You shoot this in Chicago, huh?

Kyle: Yeah, in Chicago.

Regis: Yeah, and that was one of your early homes, wasn't it?

Kyle: Yeah, until I was eleven, then I moved to Georgia.

Regis: Any reason why you picked Chicago?

Kyle: {mouth pop} Uh, Chicago because, uh, its a newspaper town. And not only that, but we shoot 50-80% of the shots on location, which is cold and miserable in that sense, but it's absolutely beautiful. You don't have to fake anything, and the architecture in that town, it's, it's a gorgeous town.

Regis: {talking over Kyle} It's great, it really is.

Kyle: And it's very accessible. Yeah.

Regis: It's for real.

Kyle: Yeah.

Regis: Well good. So, Kyle. Wow. You're a headliner now. You're the star of the show.

Kyle: {rubs his hands together and laughs}

{mumbling from Regis and Kathie}

Kyle: Oh, I gotta say, Jay Schwartz.

Kathie: Okay.

Kyle: That's all I have to say.

Regis: Jay Schwartz?

Kyle: Jay Schwartz.

Kathie: Nothing serious young man.

Regis: Didn't I have an agent once named Jay Schwartz? I mean there's a Jay Schwart in everybody's life.

Kathie: You had a bookie once named Jay Schwartz.

Regis: So, Kyle, tell us something a little bit more about yourself.

Kyle: About myself?

Kathie: Well, we know you're a personal kind of guy, and you don't want to, you know...

Regis: But you're, uh, the baby of the family.

Kyle: I'm the baby of the family. I live out in Hollywood right now. I think one of the things my, uh {scratch}, my, uh, success has given my family is relief that I'm not, uh, mooching off them. {smile} I was, uh...

Kathie: Was there anything else you ever wanted todo before acting?

Kyle: Yeah, well, I've got a sister and two brothers, uh, who, who are in professions - a psychologist, and a corporate lawyer, and a chiropractor. And they're much older.

Kathie: Full service family.

Regis: A lawyer and a chiropractor!

Kyle: If I'm injured, I'm safe. If I get thrown in jail, I'm safe. And if I go nuts, I'm safe, so, uh, I played them all, I guess.

Regis: Has your brother ever worked on your back, has he ever given you a little...

Kyle: It's my sister.

Regis: Your sister?

Kyle: Yeah, yeah, she does a good job.

Regis: Does she...

Kyle: She's got a practice up in...

Regis: Does she use her thumbs, or, how does she, uh...

Kyle: She's got all kinds of massage and, ah, a few gizmos here and there, and {popping sounds}, and...

Regis: I think chiropracting is gaining more acceptance all the time, ya know what I'm saying?

[Regis and Kathie mumble about chiropracting.]

Regis: All right, um, let's take a look at Gary in action now. He is reading a skeptical Chuck, played by Fisher Stevens, the next day's newspaper headlines...

[They show the 'Gary hit by the car' scene from "Faith."]

{Kyle shakes his head, as if waking up after being deeply engrossed in the clip.}

{applause}

Kathie: Hope they pay you a lot for that scene!

Kyle: Yeah.

Regis: Early Edition came a little early there didn't it, or a little late, or somethin'. I love the premise, ya know, the ability to see tomorrow's news, uh...

Kathie: And what would you do with it if you had it.

Regis: Exactly. Good idea. It's on CBS Saturday nights, 9:00.

{applause}

[Kyle shakes hands with Regis and Kathie Lee, starts to stand up under protest from Kathie, acknowledges Geldman (?) and exits the stage.]

The end!
