This is the original "Early Edition" mailing
list that was formed on ISOCIEL.COM and has been in existence since The Pilot episode. My
name is Sky Dancer (jsmith @ exis.net) and I am the List Owner. EarlyDues (earlydues @
yahoo.com) is our List Mom. She runs things around here. <G> This list's mission is
to provide an enjoyable environment to discuss all things relating to the television
series "Early Edition."
To ensure that this enjoyable environment exists, we have instituted a set of list rules.
We have been on the "Early Edition" list since its original inception in the
Fall of 1996 and have pretty much seen all of the different kinds of list behaviour you
can come up with. Most of the list rules will not be new territory for anyone who is a
mail list veteran. Most of us understand how to act like mature adults and are *already*
in compliance with normal list rules. These rules are for those who break them. The rest
of us get along pretty darn well, thank you very much. ;)
Note: This mailing list is "private." New members are added to the mail list
upon their request (if they have not previously been banned, and if they are not a known
spammer). If your conduct is not suitable for the list (your tone of voice, the way you
treat others, or a strange obsession to control others) you will be removed without
question or debate. We do "moderate" the list as needed. In addition to this
List Rules document, please check out the list's "Email/Discussion Group Netiquette
Tips" document, which can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/earlyedition/files/EEL_Rules_and_Guidelines/netiquette.htm
or here: http://earlydues.usanethosting.com/ieel/netiquette.htm.
We strongly suggest that you thoroughly read that document to familiarize yourself with
proper list netiquette and quoting techniques.
BOTTOM LINE: List Mom/Owner have the final say on any administrative action, including but not limited to rejecting posts, setting members to "nopost," moderating members, and banning members. These are our decisions as moderator/owner of the list. Luckily, extreme actions are generally limited to the few people who lead their lives in search of new people to antagonize. If this is your intention, there is no room here for you on our list.
WHINING, BEGGING, PLEADING or nasty notes to the List Mom about any administrative decision will most likely result in your account being set to NOPOST on the list. Decisions of this nature due to nasty, harassing or threatening notes to either of us will not be discussed, your rights to interact on this list will simply be terminated. We are sorry to have to visit these rules, but every year we get one person who is completely out of control. Our annual token from the universe I suppose. <shrug> (Don't you just hate it when previous subscribers spoil it for everyone else by making such statements necessary?)
By being subscribed to this list, YOU AGREE to abide by the rules set forth in this document. If you choose not to, then perhaps this list is not for you. Failure to comply to the List Rules may lead to your being subject to administrative action, up to and including your removal from the list. By being subscribed, YOU AGREE to abide by any regulations and actions taken by the list moderators and forfeit all rights to bring legal action against any member, moderator, or associate of the Early Edition Lovers Mail List. These rules are subject to change when needed. Whether or not the rules are posted to the list after modification, you are still responsible for knowing their content.
While many people would find the content of what follows a normal part of common courtesy towards one another, there are those for whom it must be spelled out in black and white.
** IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU
READ THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT OF LIST RULES. **
FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY LEAD TO YOUR REMOVAL FROM THE LIST.

Conservation of Bandwidth and Message
Archives
The following set of rules deal with the common 'netiquette issue of editing
when posting to a mailing list/discussion group. Why are these rules important? Some
people are visually handicapped and use "screen readers." Some people pay for
their download/transfer (bandwidth) usage or pay for their time online on a per-minute or
per-hour basis. Unedited posts clutter up the Digests and makes them darn near impossible
to read, they take up valuable archive space, and make it more difficult to follow the
discussion -- if your reply looks like it's part of the quoted portion, it can easily be
missed. Also, if you don't include *any* quoted material, your reply won't make any sense
to anybody. But most importantly, the List Mom doesn't like unedited posts. Can we say
"pet peeve?" :) To that end:
1. DO NOT QUOTE ENTIRE MESSAGES! **Limit your number of quoted lines to six (6) per topic of response.** Keep your quotes concise. You lose readers when they have to wade through 20 lines of a post they've read before and it makes life unbearable for many digest users. *For moderated members, we are actively editing out "excess quoted material" or rejecting posts which do not follow this simple formatting rule. If you continue to break the rule and ignore requests to reformat and resubmit your posts, you will be set NOPOST.* NEVER include Yahoo or other server ads, mail list footers, entire digests or quoted signature blocks from the previous message in your posts. If you have a problem editing these out, go into your mail program and TURN OFF the quote function. You can copy and paste only the quoted lines needed to direct the readers attention to what you are discussing. Be considerate of others and edit out unneccessary quoted lines BEFORE you send your post.
For helpful hints on quoting, see the "netiquette" document located under "EEL_Rules_and_Guidelines" in the group's files area here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/earlyedition/files/
(If you don't have access to the group's files, click here instead: Netiquette)
This particular rule happens to be a pet peeve of ours. It would serve you well to learn how to properly edit your own messages so we won't have to... *ahem*
2. COMBINE YOUR POSTS. When answering list mail, cut and paste the portions you want to respond to, give appropriate credits, and put more than one answer in your message. As a rule of thumb, if you've sent more than 4 e-mails to the list in one day, you've sent too many. Try to read all of your list mail before asking or answering a question - chances are the question may have already been asked and/or answered.
3. NO HTML or RTF. Mail should only be sent in plain ASCII TEXT. HTML is for web pages, not email, so please turn of your HTML or RTF settings! Although more and more e-mail programs do support HTML, there are still a good number of programs that do not. When viewed with one of those programs, HTML mail shows up as a garbled mess. In addition, if you send mail in HTML or RTF, people on digest will only see garbage. We have a very healthy number of people on this mail list in digest mode. HTML in digest creates two copies of the message, one that can be read and one full of codes. Also, HTML mail sent to Yahoo Groups automatically gets an advertisement added to the message, which takes up valuable message archive space, is downright annoying, and can contain viruses. For help in turning off your HTML or RTF settings, see here: http://www.expita.com/nomime.html)
4. NO ONE-LINE "I agree" or "me too" RESPONSES. If you want to send a one-liner, send it via PRIVATE e-mail offlist to let the writer know you agree with their point of view. Otherwise, let us know why you hold a certain opinion and why you think we should embrace yours. This rule also applies to responses about your age, gender, or location. If another list member requests this information, you should reply directly to that list member (in other words, OFFLIST), and not to the entire list.
5. NO E-CARDS! E-Cards are a problem for two reasons. (1) There are now viruses out there that mimic an e-card notification, making many people leary of clicking on those type of links unless it's something they're expecting and from someone they know; (2) E-Cards, when sent directly to a group using the e-card website's interface, include many extra lines of advertisement, thereby taking up valuable archive space. If you wish to send the group a greeting or holiday message, either type up the message yourself and send it as a regular post, or send the e-card to *your own* email address and then copy/paste *only the link to the card* into a new post, with a brief note about what it is.
6. SIGNATURES / SIGNATURE LENGTHS - Please limit your signature or .sig file to *6 lines* or under (this is pretty much a net standard). As cute as those ascii drawings are, they clutter up the list, and spam the digest. Please try to ensure that your e-mail address is included in the bottom of your message (while we do *ask* that you included your e-mail addy in your signature, neither handles or names are *required*). Not all e-mail programs will show that information in the header of e-mail messages and you may miss responses to your post without it. Feel free to "munge" your email address (for example, type it as "joe at email dot com" or "j o e @ e m a i l . c o m"), to help prevent possible harvesting by spammers.
7. SEND PRIVATE MESSAGES PRIVATELY. Make sure before you hit "SEND" on your reply that the e-mail is addressed correctly (i.e. going to a private person if the response is private). The list default goes to everyone. Also, THINK about the content of your message. Does everyone REALLY need to hear what you've written? If your response has degenerated into a discussion of paisley dresses instead of EE you may want to send your reply privately offlist.
Courtesy To Fellow List Members and Specific
iEEL List Rules
The following set of rules deal with the 'netiquette issue of common
courtesy when posting to a mailing list/discussion group as well as rules that
are specific to this group. Why are these rules important? Because it's just rude to
be, well, rude. And without them there would be anarchy. Anarchy, I say! *ahem* Um, okay,
here are the courtesy section of rules:
8. NO FLAMING. Ever. Period.
"Flaming" is considered to be any personal attack made against another member of the mail list. This includes, but is not limted to, any generalized statements that someone/everyone on the list is stupid, mindless, desperate, etc. It also includes comments about the way other people format their posts, whether they choose to put their names on them or not, and whether someone's spelling/grammar is correct. NO ONE on this list has the right to make comments about anyone's educational qualifications; including one's ability to type. DO NOT chastise others on the list for what you interpret to be a violation of the list rules. If you have a problem with something someone has done, contact that person directly or SEND YOUR COMPLAINT TO List Mom EarlyDues at EarlyDues @ yahoo.com in a private e-mail. Chastising another subscriber on the list will most likely get you set to nopost or banned. FYI, your list moderators do consider phrases such as "get a life" or "get over it" or "get on with your life" or "you people" to be in the flame-like category and anyone using those phrases in a flame-like manner should, per list rules, expect possible removal from the list with no questions asked.
9. NO OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE. This is a G rated list. We have people of all ages on here, so no offensive language please.
10. NO SPAM! This includes cutesy little chain letters that promise luck or money if you'll just send them to 10 more people. NO cookie recipes, ABSOLUTELY NO VIRUS WARNINGS, no letters about little boys dying of cancer, no selling, promoting or hawking of any sale items (long distance, web pages that pay you to visit, great deals on office supplies or Internet Service Providers, etc.). We consider any e-mail that attempts to separate the reader from his/her money, his/her religion, his/her current choice of technology or his/her mind a SPAM.
11. SPOILER WARNINGS - ***A warning should be put in the SUBJECT line of your message that SPOILERS are contained in the message along with the title of the episode you are spoiling.*** What are spoilers? When you're about to give away plot lines that may spoil the story for those who haven't seen the episode yet. You may also put spoiler notice at the beginning of your message (a simple note of "SPOILERS FOR EPISODENAME" followed by one blank line is enough to notify digest users). As a courtesy, these spoiler warnings are ALWAYS in effect. REMEMBER, we have people from countries other than the United States and Canada who have yet to see all of the episodes. Please keep them in mind when annotating spoiler information.Good spoiler subject line: "SPOILERS: The Wrong Man"
BAD spoiler subject line: "OMG! GARY'S DEAD!!!"
12. NO ALL CAPS. FOR NEWBIES TO E-MAIL - Talking or typing in complete CAPS (with the CAPS LOCK key on) is a major no-no. It is the equivalent of shouting your head off at close range.
13. NO FANFIC on the list. There is a FanFic mailing list available for those interested in posting EE related stories. (FanFic: fictional stories about "Early Edition" written by fans, for fans.) If you would like to join the EE FanFic Mail List, please go to the "Tales from the Tavern: EE Fanfic Archive" website for instructions: http://www.loony-archivist.com/eefanfic/
14. KEEP TO THE TOPIC of Early Edition; its story line, actors, writers, staff, history, character assessment, future or past events - anything related to EE or someone who works/worked there. Some people have small mail boxes and limited server time and get very aggravated when the discussion turns into whether or not the latest Star Wars movie was worth the price of the ticket.
15. NO ATTACHED FILES. Pictures, sound files, programs are not welcome on the mailing list and will, in fact, be stripped off by Yahoo!Groups. You may advertise that you have them available and those who are interested can request them via private e-mail offlist. REMEMBER, Yahoo!Groups has a small area to hold public files. If you have something new or of interest to the group, please contact EarlyDues @ yahoo.com, and she will decide if it is appropriate to add to the files area. (If we begin running out of room, we may have to limit how long files can stay in the public area.) It's much better to keep these types of files located on your own permanent web page. There are several places where you can receive free unlimited web space to store files for others to download on the web.
16. NO UNAUTHORIZED SALES of EE related items, etc. Sales of EE related items, conventions, etc. should be cleared with the List Mom/Auntie before posting.
17. DO NOT FORWARD MESSAGES. Do not forward personal email to the list from another person, or to another person from the list without the author's permission. This is a copyright violation and a serious breach of privacy and you may be removed from the list for doing so. Also, DO NOT forward messages or requests to the list from subscribers that have been banned! If you have news you feel simply MUST be shared with the list, forward it to earlydues@yahoo.com. We will forward it to the list if we feel it is appropriate.
18. NO EMAIL HARVESTING. Harvesting email addresses from this list for puposes of selling, promoting, or hawking of any items or web sites is against our rules and against Yahoo's Terms of Service. Anyone found to be harvesting email addresses will be immediately banned from the list and may be reported to Yahoo and/or your ISP.
19. DO NOT SPREAD FALSE INFORMATION. ***Please DO NOT spread false information on the list.*** If you represent yourself as speaking for any given venue regarding the show (whether a magazine, newspaper, network, production company, actor, etc.) we will not hesitate to verify said information WITH that venue and correct any misinformation publicly on the list. You will also, most likely, be banned from the list without notice if your intent was to mislead others for sake of your own aggrandizement. We have both been involved with other fandoms, have industry contacts from those previous experiences, and can usually recognize when something has been grossly misrepresented.
20. YOU MAY promote your web page on list under TWO conditions:(1) The web page is "Early Edition" related.
(2) It is a new creation, has changed addresses, has new features on it or has been updated. If you would like to add your web page address to the official list of web page links for the "Early Edition" mail list, please send your request directly to earlydues @ yahoo.com.
21. YAHOO!GROUPS ALLOWS users to participate in member sponsored surveys and a mail list calendar. To submit survey ideas or calendar dates, please e-mail earlydues @ yahoo.com directly.
22. DO NOT SEND "TEST" MESSAGES. If you haven't gotten any e-mail from the list in a while, PLEASE do not send "test" or "Can you see me?" messages to the list. If you have a question, first check your Yahoo!Groups profile at http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups to ensure you are still in a valid list status. (Remember, you must be signed into YahooGroups first before using this link.) If your ISP has bounced back e-mail to YahooGroups, it will automatically suspend mail to you for every mail list you are subscribed to. Several hours are required for YahooGroups to unbounce your subscription record and reinstate it. If you still have questions after checking your Yahoo profile, send e-mail to earlydues @ yahoo.com and she will investigate the matter.
Note to WebTV, AOL, Home.com, Hotmail, MSN, and Yahoo.com e-mail addresses: YahooGroups frequently has issues with these providers. AOL, Hotmail, and MSN will frequently delete entire batches of messages when their servers have large amounts of mail to deliver, meaning you will simply never see the mail that was to be delivered to you. Those of you on WebTV, Home.com, and Yahoo.com have bounce problems to contend with, meaning you are automatically put in a hold status in which you will receive no mail from YahooGroups because your provider indicated your mail box was full (most commonly Yahoo.com) or you don't exist (most commonly WebTV and Home.com). These are the idiosyncrasies of those particular providers who have a long history of this type of problem with YahooGroups. If this becomes annoying, we can only suggest you find a different provider. We do the best we can to remedy the situation, but your provider is in charge of when and how it can be resolved. We, as moderators, have no control over it.
23. DO NOT SEND "UNSUBSCRIBE" POSTS TO THE LIST! Follow the directions for unsubscribing that are at the bottom of *every* post to the list. Sending an "unsubscribe" post to the list address may put your e-mail address on the "banned" list.To unsubscribe from this list, go to the Yahoo!Groups web site, at http://groups.yahoo.com , sign in if you need to, and select the My Groups link from the menu bar on the top. This menu will also let you change your subscription between digest and normal mode. You may also unsubscribe or change your delivery mode by using the email commands listed below.
24. WHEN IN DOUBT, ask the List Mom at earlydues@yahoo.com. She will try to respond within 24 hours, unless she is out of e-mail range, or completely swamped. Please put EE LIST ADMIN in the subject line.
And that's it... for now. :) For the most part we are all here to have a good time. If you remember these simple list rules and be considerate of others your experience on the "Early Edition Lovers" mail list should be a pleasant one.
Early Edition "Keepers" - - For information on what a "keeper" is and how to become one, visit the EE Keepers Website here: http://earlydues.usanethosting.com/eekeepers/index.htm
Please Note: If you looking for copies of the Early Edition episodes, you can contact Valerie Bristor at: bristor_v @ popmail.firn.edu (remove the spaces around the @ symbol). She has most of the episodes and is willing to make copies for whoever needs them. She also has other Kyle Chandler-related items and Fisher Stevens' 'Key West' series, so if that's something you're interested in, be sure to ask her for her whole list.
