NBC SUBPOENAS LURIE TO OVERSEE FBI-SET
PROJECT LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Writer-director Rod Lurie is back on the primetime development beat with an FBI drama project for NBC. The network is close to giving a premium script commitment to a one-hour project to be produced by DreamWorks TV and Touchstone TV, where Lurie has a joint overall deal. The untitled show is described as a juxtaposition of the stories of a young female FBI agent and a mobster in a major U.S. city, probably Seattle. "I think that if we show parallel stories between a member of the mob and a member of the FBI, we can show how thin the line really is between the law and lawless," Lurie said. Leslie Bibb, who toplined "Capital City," Lurie's two-hour drama pilot for DreamWorks TV, Touchstone TV and ABC this past season, is being eyed for the role of the FBI agent. According to sources, several other "Capital City" cast members, including David Paymer and Kyle Chandler, have been approached by Lurie to star in the drama for NBC. DreamWorks last month inked a pod development pact with NBC, though sources said the Lurie project was in the works before that deal was finished. Lurie said he was very encouraged to set up the project at NBC when he saw copies of the network's 2002 pilots "Kingpin," "Boomtown" and "War Stories." "NBC is almost like being at HBO," he said. "They're giving a lot of leverage to their creators, and that's pretty extraordinary." Lurie plans to go to "places that've never been explored on TV, taking absolutely everything to the edge." Lurie wrote the NBC project and will executive produce with his producing partner Marc Frydman. Lurie, who also directed "Capital City," said that he "would dearly love to direct the (NBC) pilot" if his schedule allows. On the feature side, Lurie, repped by Agency for the Performing Arts, WMA and Brillstein-Grey, recently signed on to direct the romantic comedy "Beat the Eagle" for Intermedia Films and is penning a script for DreamWorks that Steven Spielberg might direct. Lurie's feature directing credits include "The Contender," which he also wrote, and "The Last Castle." Bibb is best known for her starring role on the WB Network's "Popular." She recently signed to do a five-episode arc on "ER." Bibb, whose feature credits include "The Skulls," is repped by ICM, Raw Talent and attorney Mark Stankevich. |

MR. BERENGER GOES TO WASHINGTON HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Tom Berenger and Kyle Chandler are headed to Congress for ABC, while Laurie Metcalf will reunite with former ``Roseanne'' producer Chuck Lorre for CBS, as the networks firm up casting for their fall series contenders. <snip> Here's the latest in TV pilot casting: Berenger will portray the majority party Senate leader in writer/director Rod Lurie's yet-untitled Washington-set project for ABC. It's the ``Platoon'' star's first regular starring role in a primetime TV series. Chandler, who co-starred in ABC's short-lived ``What About Joan,'' will play the legislative director for a congressman played by David Paymer. Chandler's character develops a romantic interest in former ``Popular'' star Leslie Bibb's lead character. Katharine Ross joined the cast last week as the first lady to Peter Fonda's recurring role as president. <snip rest of unrelated info> |

PROCTOR JOINS CAST OF 'CSI' SPIN-OFF Rod Lurie's drama pilot from DreamWorks TV and Touchstone Television has cast Tom Berenger and Kyle Chandler. The project will be Berenger's first foray into primetime series television. Berenger will play a powerful, arch-conservative Senate majority leader in the Washington-based pilot, while Chandler will play the legislative director for Rep. Benny Fletcher (David Paymer), who develops a romantic interest in Fletcher's assistant, the show's leading character, Paige Armstrong (Leslie Bibb). Other cast members include Katharine Ross and Peter Fonda. |

PETER FONDA ENTERS WHITE HOUSE FOR ABC LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The man who was once the on-screen symbol of the counterculture may soon be playing the on-screen version of the ultimate establishment figure. Peter Fonda, who co-wrote and starred in "Easy Rider," is close to signing a deal to play the president of the United States in an ABC pilot from writer-director Rod Lurie ("The Contender," "The Last Castle" ). Fonda will join fellow Oscar nominee David Paymer ("Mr. Saturday Night" ) on the project. "Peter Fonda as the president of the United States, the Easy Rider as the commander in chief," Lurie muses to The Hollywood Reporter. "How much cooler does it get than that?" Lurie's two-hour pilot centers on a female congressional staffer in her first year on Capitol Hill. Should the pilot, which Lurie is writing and directing, be picked up, Fonda's president would become a recurring character in the series. Paymer is set to play a Republican congressman in the pilot. Lurie says the character is modeled on several current and former politicians, including former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and current House Majority Whip Tom DeLay. (Per 11/08/2001 zap2it article, this program is tentatively titled "The Beltway.") |
